## Core principles

- Optimize for instant comprehension. Make the takeaway visible in seconds.
- Treat defaults as choices. Remove gridlines, borders, colors, and charts that do not serve a purpose.
- Separate data from presentation. Keep source data organized independently from the reader-facing view.
- Keep one source of truth. Derived values should reference inputs rather than being copied manually.
- Separate inputs, logic, and outputs so a reader can understand what changes when an assumption moves.
- Design for the next person. Clear names, frozen headers, consistent formats, and visible assumptions beat tribal knowledge.
- Minimize manual steps. A good sheet should be repeatable, not a one-off document.

## Review checklist

1. Can a new reader identify the main takeaway in three seconds?
2. Is the data organized for the reader rather than merely reflecting how it was assembled?
3. Are inputs, calculations, and outputs clearly separated?
4. Are headers, dates, numbers, percentages, currency, and units consistent?
5. Are panes frozen so context survives scrolling?
6. Are columns wide enough and rows tall enough to read without manual resizing?
7. Is color used sparingly for emphasis rather than decoration?
8. Are gridlines and borders removed unless they communicate hierarchy or grouping?
9. Are formulas, links, and assumptions easy to inspect?
10. Is there anything that can be removed without losing meaning?

## Recommended presentation pattern

Use a clear title and subtitle, a compact summary or takeaway area, a well-labeled main table, and separate supporting tabs for source data or calculations. Apply the same formatting conventions throughout the workbook. Never sacrifice accuracy or traceability for visual polish.
